Summer is here, and it's absolute the perfect time to soak up the sun and create some lasting memories with your dog. Of course, with the warmer weather comes some important considerations for keeping your companion safe and happy. Here's some great ideas for making the most of the summer months while ensuring your dog stays cool, comfortable, happy and entertained.
1. Water Wonderland
Swimming: If your dog loves the water, find a dog-friendly beach or lake where they can splash around and cool off. Always supervise them closely and consider a life jacket for extra safety, especially if they're not strong swimmers. If they don't have a great recall or if there are leash laws, use a long line so that they can explore.
Sprinkler Fun: Turn on the sprinkler in your backyard and let your pup chase the water jets. It's a simple and inexpensive way to beat the heat and burn off some energy. Splash pads are also great for this!
Kiddie Pool Party: Fill a kiddie pool with cool water and some floating toys for a refreshing backyard oasis. You can even toss blueberries, baby carrots or doggy treats into the pool for a fun game of diving for deliciousness!
Paddleboarding or Kayaking: If your dog is adventurous, try taking them out on a paddleboard or kayak. Just be sure to introduce them to the watercraft slowly and use a doggy life vest.
2. Outdoor Adventures
Hiking: Explore nature trails with your pup and let them sniff away! Remember to bring plenty of water for both of you, and check if the trail is dog-friendly beforehand. If there are leash laws, be sure to abide by them.
Camping: Pitch a tent in a pet-friendly campground and enjoy the great outdoors together. Don't forget essentials like a dog bed, leash, treats and poop bags.
Picnics: Pack a delicious picnic lunch and find a shady spot in the park for a relaxing meal with your furry friend. Always follow leash laws!
Outdoor Dining: Many restaurants offer dog-friendly patios where you can enjoy a meal with your pup by your side. Please make sure your pup is ready for this by working on socialization.
3. Cooling Down
Frozen Treats: Whip up some homemade frozen dog treats using yogurt, peanut butter, and/or fruits. You can also find a variety of frozen dog treats at pet stores. Silicone ice trays are great for making your own pup-cicles!
Cooling Mat: Invest in a cooling mat for your dog to lie on during hot days. These mats are designed to stay cool even in warm temperatures.
Hydration: Always have plenty of fresh water available for your dog. You can even carry a portable water bowl for on-the-go hydration.
4. Summer Safety Tips
Hot Pavement: Avoid walking your dog on hot pavement, as it can burn their paws. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement is cooler or be sure stick to grassy areas.
Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car: Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels very quickly. During the head of the summer, it's never safe to leave your dog unattended in car.
Watch for Signs of Heatstroke: Panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, and vomiting are signs of heatstroke, a serious condition that requires immediate veterinary attention. If your dog is acting abnormally, especially after a walk in warm weather, be sure to call your vet!
5. Other Summer Fun Ideas
Doggy Playdates: Arrange playdates with other dog owners at a park or dog-friendly beach. Rent a SniffSpot with friends and enjoy each other's company.
Training Games: Keep your dog mentally stimulated with training games in the backyard or at a park. Tricks are fun to teach!
Agility Courses: If your dog loves a challenge, try an agility course designed for dogs - you can even make simple agility items yourself!
Outdoor Movie Night: Set up a projector in your backyard and enjoy a doggy movie night with your dog under the stars.
With some planning and preparation, you can enjoy an amazing summer full of excitement and adventure with your cherished best friend. Always make their safety and comfort a priority and be sure to treasure every moment spent together.
