Methodology & Philosophy

At UpSwing Canine Behavioral Services, we offer effective, humane, and relationship-centered support for dogs and their families. Our work is rooted in kindness, clarity, and understanding, not intimidation, discomfort, or fear. We use reward-based methods that are both science-informed and emotionally grounded, helping dogs feel safe enough to learn and families feel confident in guiding them.

It is important to understand that gentle does not mean permissive. Structure, boundaries, and consistency are essential to helping dogs thrive. We do not employ or advocate for the use of choke chains, prong or shock collars. Each plan that we create is customized to the individual dog, honoring their unique temperament, health, and emotional world.

We also know that when we use the term reward-based, it may be confusing. Some trainers might describe themselves this way even if they rely heavily on corrections or aversive tools most of the time, while only offering the occasional treat, pet, or toy.
At UpSwing, reward-based means something very different, something true to its meaning: teaching through reinforcement, trust, and compassion, without fear or discomfort.

This approach reflects the humane behavior principles recommended by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. We believe that with time, teamwork, and trust, every dog, even the most sensitive, can learn, grow, and feel at home in their world.
